Crossovers & Replicas etc
We read of crossover stories where people have written stories with Dr Who meeting Star Trek etc or somesuch else - they're all over the net if you look - but what about writing a story based on song lyrics alone? Years ago when David, Barry and Ashley ran the BADWAS * David used to produce an enormous magazine some 36 pages long of photocopied stuff all about Dr Who and great fun at that - and in one issue Ashley put a one-page article about the influences/ similarities in the music and lyrics of Gary Numan and Dr Who.
Now luckily for you lot Ashley can't locate that article or remeber anything from it but here are the lyrics to a very old Numan song from his early "I wouldn't perform that old stuff any more because I only do new stuff" period over 20 years ago - called "We have a technical"
We have a random on the westside
Personality malfunction
He says I can't give you anything at all
Just a room with a bad view of you
He sent a letter to a downstat
Saying sorry that I missed you
But I can't think of anything to do
He's addicted to the time track
We have a technical
We have a technical
He's in a hotel where they all go
Saying "Boy, I've lost my memory"
It's so surprising
Just how quickly things can end
Like a hero on a platform of friends
This table is so crowded
With people that I don't know
And I never really turn
My thoughts on you
So the image breaks down again
We have a technical
We have a technical
I suppose it's very shady
At least until the lights go out
Advertising posters on the wall
And the young boys singing softly
Do they ever come back
Or is it always at the wrong time
I could crawl around the floor
Just like I'm real
And move a hand in front of my eyes
We have a technical
We have a technical
Now maybe it's about cybermen or robots (replcas) but it's certainly stirs the imagination. Now Numan's early work was based on the works of Phillip K Dick and the film Blade Runner which came out after Numan's early stuff of this type was also based on the same stories. Maybe that's why a lot of Numan fans like Dr Who and vice versa.
Maybe someone can write a new story for the new Doctor based on some song lyrics - come on if a new story is being written around a monster that won the Blue Peter competition then it's worth thinking about. Not that the new series need any writers as they've got it all sewn up for years to come as have Big Finish... Oh yes and that monster is brilliant!!!
But it's still worth thinking about! Are there stories or song lyrics or situations you think could be turned into a Doctor Who story?
* The BADWAS (Brighton Area Doctor Who Society) are still going strong and have their annual barbeque this summer 2006 (with a special guest from Doctor Who) as well as regular meetings. Doctor Who fans who can get to their meetings in Sussex England are welcome to join as always.
