We’re still here – we haven’t moved.
OK maybe further on?? Actually yes. Mind you, due to our lives getting in the way of working on Devious (as they should – this is a hobby) – we only managed to meet up and debrief after the DWAS Convention and Showing of Episode 5 this last few days! We are so busy we just don’t get time to meet as a four!
Well we did have a gathering this week at Stephen’s and a good old catch up was had by all. We also turned our attentions to life, the universe and Nu-Who of course – with Ncuti Gatwa establishing himself in the role. The yellow duffle coat was a hit (shades of Sarah Jane???).
We also of course talked about the episode showing at the convention and turned our attention to the scene missing from that presentation. As the convention loomed earlier in the year we decided to rejig a few shots here and there and lose a particular scene from the edit so we could be sure of presenting something at the Capitol. If you didn’t know what was missing you wouldn’t miss it for episode five, but what was taken out does provide an important bridge between episodes 2 and 6 so it has to go back in. Mark is working on it now and is experimenting with some ideas to get it to work as we would want it to be.
There are a number of other bits to tidy up and a lot of the cgi in the latter part of the episode needs to be reviewed so that consistent effects are being shown from shot to shot – there was some variation which people may not have spotted – but we did!!! A lot of these were known about but left in as the time to correct would have affected our chances of completion, so they will be corrected for the release.
We always seem to say we like the latest episode best – after having been daunted before we started work on it each year for the past three or four! Remember the filming on these episodes was completed over twenty years ago and the whole Devious Project is about trying to restore them to match the ideas we had had at the outset, only with better kit than we had then.
Thanks to CGI, which had only just been invented when we started filming we can make the scenes and effects that were in our heads a lot better than we could ever have hoped. But it does take a while and there is lots to do. (Blimey you should see the original raw footage and see what we have done since!).
Here’s us having our meeting…

… and then messing about for the camera as per…

And now a new image from Episode 5 to keep you going…
